How does figurative language and connotative meaning of words shape the tone of the poem?

Langston Hughes’s poem “Mother to Son” has an inspirational tone.  In the poem, a mother tells her son that her “life ain’t been no crystal stair.” This is a metaphor meaning that life has been hard for her with many setbacks and hardships.  She sets an example and inspires her son by saying “for I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’.” The word honey carries a loving or caring connotation which is used to inspire her son.
